Cardinal Health launches CareFusion with Rapid Infusion

22nd October 2007

Cardinal Health has announced the launch of the CareFusion transfusion verification technology with Rapid Infusion that provides a novel method of transfusion verification for use in emergency situations in order to protect patients from blood transfusion errors.

The system offers a systematic process of positive patient identification for the matching of blood components together with efficient provision of documentation at all times.

While the CareFusion system has been in use for three years in the patient-room environment, the addition of the Rapid Infusion feature enables the technology to be used in the critical care environment, as the time required for documentation is reduced.

Kristi Custard, an assistant nurse manager of cardiovascular recovery at St Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, said: “The CareFusion transfusion verification Rapid Infusion feature provides St Luke’s with the ability to help ensure we are transfusing the right blood to the right patient, even in the most critical environments.”

She added that patient safety is of top priority at St Luke’s, while novel methods to provide safe and efficient treatment are continually being sought by the hospital.

In December 2006, a Medical Research Council study revealed that patients may be at risk of contracting variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease through contaminated surgical instruments and blood used in transfusions.
