Cardinal Health signs RFID SmartSponge distribution agreement

8th April 2008

Cardinal Health has announced that it has signed a primary distribution agreement for the radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled SmartSponge sponge counting and detection system from Clearcount Medical Solutions.

The system operates by alerting surgical staff if sponges, which are permanently affixed with a passive RFID-tag, remain in patients.

As part of the solution, a SmartBucket display shows up any count discrepancies, while the SmartWand used in combination with a SmartMat placed beneath the patient can be used to identify any sponges remaining in the individual.

The company claims that the system can prevent unnecessary X-rays, reduces the chances of errors, minimises delays in procedures and saves time.

Steve Inacker, president and general manager of Presource kitting at Cardinal Health, said: “Patient safety has always been a top priority for hospitals and they are becoming even more focused on preventing foreign objects from being left behind following surgery.”

He added that this agreement highlights the company’s continued dedication to offering customers cutting-edge technology to enhance safety and productivity.

Under the terms of the distribution agreement, Cardinal Health will now be the main distributor of the system to hospitals, surgery centres and other healthcare distributors in the US, offering the system as a standalone product, as well as part of its Presource kits.

In September 2007, Cardinal Health advised healthcare facilities to follow recent Association of periOperative Registered Nurse guidelines and avoid products made form natural rubber latex to prevent against reactions and the sensitising of individuals.
