Care services minister says more needs to be done for mental health

14th April 2009

More needs to be done to tackle mental health problems, care services minister Phil Hope has asserted.

The comment came after a recent strategy – New Horizons – was announced to help the millions of people who may suffer from a condition at some point in their lives.

The latest scheme builds on the National Service Framework, which has worked to transform mental health care over the last decade and comes to an end in 2009.

Mr Hope asserted he wants to examine how individuals can look after their health and prevent them from becoming sick, adding that everyone – including organisations and employers – is responsible for helping the cause.

“I’m keen to tackle the stigma that’s associated with it – this isn’t something we can shy away from, mental ill health is as serious as physical illnesses such as heart disease and cancer,” he remarked.

Mr Hope concluded he hopes to put a scheme in place that will improve services, while promoting public health and wellbeing.

Last week, dentists across the country were being invited to have their say in how to improve NHS oral health services.
