Colgate-Palmolive launches AI-powered electronic toothbrush

10th January 2018

Colgate-Palmolive has announced the launch of a new electronic toothbrush that uses artificial intelligence to help users improve the way they brush their teeth.

The Colgate Smart Electronic Toothbrush E1 with Artificial Intelligence has been developed to provide real-time feedback about brushing technique, with real-time sensors and AI algorithms designed to detect brushing effectiveness in 16 zones of the mouth.

It incorporates Bluetooth connectivity and sonic vibrating technology, and is paired with the Colgate Connect app, which provides a 3D brushing coach to create an enjoyable and effective oral care routine.

The app and the toothbrush itself make use of the Apple ResearchKit, meaning consenting users can contribute to a crowdsourced toothbrushing database that will be used to support future innovations.

Further underlining its partnership with Apple, the brush is set to launch in the US exclusively through Apple stores and via the company's website.

Dr Patricia Verduin, chief technology officer at Colgate-Palmolive, said: "Using Apple ResearchKit to expand the boundaries of oral care is a testament to Colgate's drive to create innovative solutions that help people take better care of themselves."
