Cook Medical completes enrolment for vascular access trial

13th August 2013

Cook Medical has announced the completion of patient enrolment for a clinical trial of a new surgical technique that could aid the treatment of peripheral arterial disease.

The manufacturer recruited 200 patients for the Tibiopedal Access for Crossing of Infrainguinal Artery Occlusions study, which is assessing the benefits of achieving vascular access via below-the-knee arteries.

Each of the patients involved in the trial is affected by completely obstructed lower-limb arteries, with physicians using a needle to access blood vessels before advancing wire guides and catheters up the leg to reach and cross arterial blockages so the occlusion can be opened.

Rob Lyles, vice-president and global leader of Cook Medical's peripheral intervention division, said: "We hope that completing enrolment is an important step in bringing the below-the-knee technique to patients, many of whom have had other procedures fail."

Last week, the company announced that it has resumed shipping of its Zilver PTX drug-eluting peripheral stent in the US, Europe and Japan, following a recent voluntary recall.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801624590-ADNFCR
