Cook Medical launches new five-lumen central venous catheter

25th August 2010

Cook Medical has announced the launch of a new Spectrum central venous catheter, which is designed to offer ease and convenience while reducing the risk of infections.

The medical technology firm's new five-lumen catheter reduces catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) using technology which impregnates the device with antimicrobial drugs, minocycline and rifampin.

According to the company, this technology has been clinically proven to be effective against the bacteria which colonise the surfaces of catheters, thereby preventing against infections which affect thousands of patients each year.

Cook stated that this new product is designed to complete the Spectrum product range and has been launched in response to demand from physicians.

Bruce Gingles, global leader for Cook's critical care division, said: "Now that we are able to offer a comprehensive product line, physicians will have the technology they need to fight CRBSIs as effectively as possible."

Last month, Cook Medical highlighted data from two independent studies of its BIGopsy Backloading Biopsy Forceps, demonstrating the benefits the device offers to clinicians.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800039174-ADNFCR
