Councils chosen to receive funds for learning disability-oriented housing

22nd December 2016

Housing specially designed for the needs of people with learning disabilities will be created following a new government funding announcement.

The Department of Health has named the local authorities that will receive a share of the 25 million pound housing and technology fund, which will help people with learning disabilities to live more independently in their own homes.

A total of 52 projects across England have been selected, including efforts to adapt existing housing, create new accommodation and provide more support for those who need it through schemes such as shared ownership programmes.

The main aims of the fund are to prevent unnecessary inpatient admissions, encourage community-based solutions to promote independence and choice, make the best use of new technologies to improve existing accommodation, and save money spent on hands-on care.

David Mowat, minister for community health and care, said: "I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the successful projects. We had a fantastic response to our call for bids and I'm delighted that the innovative ideas put forward will now become a reality."
