Covance: New facility to build on global expansion

23rd November 2007

Covance has announced the purchase of a partially-constructed manufacturing facility in the US.

Located on a 47-acre property in Prince William County’s Technology Park formerly owned by Eli Lilly, the firm intends to transform the current facility into a 410,000-square-foot "state-of-the-art early drug development laboratory" offering safety testing and chemistry analysis services.

"The increased demand from our biopharmaceutical clients for our preclinical safety service offerings has led Covance to seek opportunities to enhance and expand our operations in Virginia and build upon our multi-year global expansion plans," explained Wendel Barr, senior vice-president of Covance.

"For 60 years, Covance operations in Virginia have made significant contributions to the development of new medicines for HIV/Aids, breast cancer, heart disease, leukaemia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, deadly infections, and many other debilitating diseases," added the vice-president.

As well as relocating around 450 current employees from its existing operations in Virginia to the new facility by 2011, Covance plans to hire an additional 100 employees by 2014, with a total planned investment of approximately $175 million (£85 million) in the project.

Headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, Covance is one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive drug development services firms, with global operations in more than 20 countries and approximately 8,700 employees worldwide.ADNFCR-1050-ID-18367069-ADNFCR
