Covidien study shows benefits of SILS Port in laparoscopic surgery

6th April 2011

Covidien has published data from a new clinical study that demonstrates the effectiveness of its SILS Port device in laparoscopic surgery.

Interim results have been published from a trial evaluating the performance of the instrument – which allows procedures to be conducted through a single incision – in gall bladder removal applications.

It was shown that the SILS Port-based technique delivered the same level of safety and efficacy as standard multi-port cholecystectomy methods, while offering an improved cosmetic result.

According to principal investigator Dr Jeffrey Marks, this may persuade more patients who are concerned about post-operative scarring to consider this option.

Dr Michael Tarnoff, chief medical officer for the manufacturer, said: "Covidien is dedicated to collaborating with the surgical community to generate evidence that supports the use of its innovative products to help patients achieve better outcomes."

Last month, the company published interim study data on its Parietex ProGrip self-fixating mesh, showing the potential benefits it offers during inguinal hernia repairs.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800489592-ADNFCR
