Current social care workforce ‘insufficient to meet demand’

8th February 2018

The number of people working in social care is not sufficient to meet the UK's growing care demands, according to a new report.

Analysis from the National Audit Office has indicated that the Department of Health and Social Care needs to do more to support a sustainable social care workforce, particularly at a time when unmet care needs are increasing.

Key concerns include the fact that many workers feel undervalued due to low pay, tough working conditions and limited opportunities for career progression, resulting in the turnover rate of care staff reaching 27.8 percent in 2016-17, with vacancy rates also on the rise.

Moreover, there is no national strategy currently in place to address this challenge, with the report indicating that key government commitments to make the sector more attractive through enhanced training and career development have not been followed through.

Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office, said: "Social care cannot continue as a Cinderella service – without a valued and rewarded workforce, adult social care cannot fulfil its crucial role of supporting elderly and vulnerable people in society."
