David Cameron: NHS is fantastic and precious

21st August 2009

In a bid to show his party’s support for the NHS, David Cameron has hit back at critics of the system, briefly evoking the struggle of his late son Ivan.

According to the leader of the Conservative Party, the NHS is a “fantastic and precious” aspect of living in Britain.

Mr Cameron, who was speaking at a conference in Bolton, said that when “something happens to someone you love, you know that whoever you are […] there’s a place you can go where people will look after you and do their best to make things right”.

Ivan, who was born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, died in February of this year.

He added that any plans to cut NHS spending would be a transgression and said that if the Conservative Party wins the next election, it will increase funding for the organisation in line with inflation from 2011 to 2014.

Mr Cameron’s comments come after MEP Daniel Hannan said that the NHS is a “60-year mistake” that he “wouldn’t wish on anyone” as the US’ Obama administration works to devise a new healthcare system.
