Dawn Primarolo says she is delighted with new HPA chair

5th March 2009

Dawn Primarolo is delighted with the new appointment Dr David L Heymann as the chair of the Health Protection Agency (HPA), she has asserted.

The public health minister made her comments after it was announced that he will take over the position from Sir William Stewart when he retires in April of this year.

Currently, Dr Heymann is the assistant director general for health security and environment for the World Health Organization.

Ms Primarolo explained the role he has now accepted is a unique post, adding that she is “pleased to welcome someone with such an outstanding senior career in the international public health field”.

The public health minister continued to note that she looks forward to working alongside the new chair with important tasks in the future, noting the merger in April 2009 with the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control.

An independent organisation, the HPA, was set up by the government in 2003 to protect the public from health threats, including environmental hazards and infectious diseases.
