Denelan Reveals Innovation, Technology & Science Department
Michelle Donelan has revealed that a “transformative” department dedicated to innovation, technology, and science, will be established. However, many claim the creation of this is an unfortunate diversion from real issues within the government.
After a rent restructuring of the cabinet, Donelan now holds the position of Innovation and Technology lead. There has not been a secretary of state whose primary responsibility is science since before the millennium.
Donelan expressed that science and innovation are “a top priority for the prime minister because he understands how much innovation, growth and opportunity are at the heart of his promises that he made to the public.”
In her new station, the science lead promised to unite the government’s current projects within this sector, committing publicly financed research to the creation of valuable employment opportunities and an improved healthcare system, while also elevating the UK to the top of the field.
However, scientific policy expert Professor James Wilsdon disagreed, stating that it was an unusual choice to significantly reshuffle the way research is conducted in the UK.
“We may be at the beginning of a golden era under Rishi Sunak as PM” but if he does not last, “tinkering with the furniture, name badges and structures is really a distraction from the actual priorities.
“There are many more pressing issues facing UK science than who is in charge of it.”
