Dentists highlight growing reliance on charity support for UK dentistry

3rd January 2018

UK dental patients are increasingly having to rely on charity support to receive the dental care they require, according to a group of industry professionals.

In a letter to the Daily Telegraph, more than 400 dentists have raised concerns about the impact that bureaucracy and target-driven planning is having on care quality, with many dentists lacking the time to take preventative action against oral health diseases.

As a result, Dentaid – a charity that typically works in Africa, Asia and Central America – set up its first UK scheme two years ago and has since expanded, with mobile services working in Hampshire, Cornwall and Buckinghamshire.

Additionally, a US charity called Remote Area Medical is seeking to set up mass temporary clinics in the UK offering free dental care, having run 900 such events in other parts of the world.

Dentists say that the growing presence of charitable organisations within the UK dental care continuum is evidence that NHS dentistry is unable to deliver basic care.

The letter blamed the current problems on a system that is "under-resourced and focused more upon experimental targets and tick-boxes than patients", adding that "our inadequate dental systems are now an international disgrace".
