Department of Health to launch new cancer campaign in 2011

23rd September 2010

The Department of Health (DH) has announced plans to launch a new awareness campaign of the three most dangerous cancers at the beginning of next year.

Commencing in January 2011, 59 local campaigns will be conducted across the UK to alert people of the signs of early-stage breast, bowel and lung cancer, as well as encourage them to get themselves checked out.

This will involve activities such as social marketing and advertising via bus routes at a local level, while the DH will also be trialling centrally-led bowel cancer campaign activity in two regions.

The DH states that this campaign will help cancer patients to be treated earlier and more successfully, thereby closing the gap in survival rates between the UK and other parts of Europe.

Care services minister Paul Burstow said: "The NHS is spending at European levels but still not delivering European cancer survival rates."

Later this month, the DH will offer its support to Walk4Life, a national event designed to promote walking and physical activity as a means of enhancing health.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800079428-ADNFCR
