DH announces first Innovation Challenge Prize winners

3rd June 2011

The Department of Health (DH) has announced the first winners of its prize scheme that aims to encourage innovative patient care concepts from NHS staff.

Funding is to be provided via the Innovation Challenge Prizes initiative to support three new concepts devised by healthcare professionals that will potentially deliver widespread savings to the health service.

They include a home dialysis scheme created by Manchester Royal Infirmary, NHS Bristol's Scriptswitch prescription monitoring software and Cambridge Medical Research Council Cancer Unit and Addenbrookes University Hospitals' new Cytosponge oesophageal cancer testing system.

The application process for the next round of prizes is now open, with the closing date set for August 14th 2011.

Health minister Lord Howe said: "Innovation is essential to help the NHS modernise by delivering more for less, improving the quality of care for patients whilst at the same time saving money."

This comes after the DH allocated six million pounds in funding to healthcare-related projects conducted by charities earlier this week.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800566978-ADNFCR
