Different alcoholic drinks ‘have varying effects on mood’
A new study has demonstrated that different alcoholic drinks can have varying effects on the drinker's mood and emotional state.
The King's College London study questioned nearly 30,000 people aged 18 to 34 from 21 different countries, finding that different drinks were associated with positive and negative feeling to variable degrees.
For example, red wine made people more lethargic than white wine, while those drinking drinking red wine or beer generally felt relaxed. More than 40 percent said spirits made them feel sexy, with over half saying these drinks gave them energy and confidence.
Spirits were generally shown to have a range of potential effects, with these proving more likely than all other drink types to be associated with feelings of aggression, illness, restlessness and tearfulness.
The report also indicated that men were significantly more likely than women to associate feelings of aggression with alcohol consumption, particularly among heavier drinkers.
Professor Mark Bellis from the Public Health Wales NHS Trust said: "People may rely on alcohol to help them feel a certain way. People might drink to feel more confident or relaxed, but they also risk other negative emotional responses too."
