Dionex explains cefepime determination method

Dionex has described an improved method for determining amounts of cefepime in pharmaceutical products.

In an application note (205) – Determination of Cefepime and Cefepime-Related Substances Using HPLC with UV Detection – the company described how to determine the concentration and purity of cefepime more quickly than described in the European Pharmacopeia (EP) and United States Pharmacopeia (USP) monographs.

The improved method uses an optimised gradient, an Ultimate 3000 HPLC system, an Acclaim 120 C18 and a 3um column to assure compliance with EP and USP methods and drug potency and purity, information published on Laboratory Talk said.

Furthermore, the company described methods for improving the resolution between cefepime-related substances in the same application note.

According to Dionex: "Cefepime, a fourth generation cephalosporin, is a broad spectrum antibiotic with improved activity against gram-negative bacteria over other commercially available cephalosporin drugs."
