DoH launches video tool to fight NHS C difficile infection

13th August 2007

The Department of Health (DoH) has announced the launch of an online video tool to help the NHS in its efforts to tackle cases of Clostridium difficile (C difficile) infection in the health service.

Presenting a case study of the control of an outbreak of infection at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust, the video aims to spread best practice on the prevention of C difficile infection.

The clip also includes a report from a patient who contracted the infection.

It is hoped that following viewing of the video module, NHS staff will be aware of the diagnosis and treatment of C difficile infection, while also being more aware of the importance of hand hygiene, cautious use of antibiotics and the patient experience in these cases.

Christine Beasley, chief nursing officer, said: “Staff must understand the causes of infections and learn the lessons from outbreaks in order to prevent other outbreaks in the future.”

She added that the video module – based on a successful containment of C difficile infection – is a useful supplement to staff training on the issue.

Last month, the government reported a 22 per cent rise in cases of C difficile infection in the health service, while cases of MRSA infection fell by six per cent.
