DoH unveils strategy ‘to get millions moving’

11th February 2009

The general public is being encouraged to do more exercise by a new strategy from the Department of Health (DoH).

Named Be Active, Be Healthy, the plan will see measures including partnerships with private and voluntary organisations, more GPs offering fitness advice and a four million pound grant for County Sport Partnerships.

The campaign will also see the establishment of a national Physical Activity Alliance, which will incorporate the resources of leisure centres and other services.

Commenting on the launch, public health minister Dawn Primarolo said it will form a vital part of the Change4Life “lifestyle revolution”, which helps families to eat well, move more and live longer.

She added: “Physical activity is the key to stopping this country becoming the obesity capital of the world.

“Not enough of us do the magic 30 minutes, five days a week,” Ms Primarolo went on to note.

Last month, the DoH launched a survey of children’s health – named How Are the Kids?.
