Drinkers unaware of calorie content, survey shows

20th April 2009

To avoid piling on extra pounds, the government is advising the public to cut down on their drinking.

Around two fifths (42 per cent) of women are unaware that a glass of white wine has the same number of calories as a bag of crisps, according to research by the Know Your Limits Campaign.

Heather Caswell is a spokesperson for the British Nutrition Foundation. She explained many females do not realise two large glasses of vino provides them with nearly 20 per cent of their daily calorie allowance.

Although people would not consume a tumbler of single cream, they would not think twice about drinking a one or two pints, she remarked, adding that alcohol consumption can lead to weight gain over a period of time.

“Sticking to sensible drinking habits ? will not only help keep off those extra pounds but will also help decrease your risk of serious health problems, such as some types of cancer and liver disease,” said Ms Caswell.

Earlier this month, the Department of Health launched a new strategy called New Horizons to promote good mental health.
