DSC highlights increase in UK clinical academics

11th July 2017

A new survey completed by the Dental Schools Council (DSC) has revealed an uptick in the number of clinical academic staff across the UK.

Clinical academics are defined as individuals who combine teaching and research with clinical practice, with the number of dental professionals classed in this group rising by 139.9 percent since they were first included in the survey in 2007.

This was highlighted as a significant result for the dental profession as a whole, with DSC chair Professor Callum Youngson stating: "Dental schools can be very proud of the work they have done to bring the numbers of dental clinical academics back to a strong level.

"This is of significant benefit to the quality of dental care in the UK."

However, while the body was quick to demonstrate the positive nature of this increase, it did also suggest there are a number of difficulties still to overcome within the sector.

According to the survey's results, more than one in 20 academic posts currently remain vacant, with eight of the UK's 18 dental schools reporting difficulties in attempting to recruit for specific specialties or grades.
