Eisai publishes positive trial data for weight loss drug

15th July 2010

Eisai has published new clinical data which demonstrates the efficacy of its weight loss treatment lorcaserin.

According to statistics from the two-year Bloom study, patients trialled using the treatment were able to achieve statistically significant improvements in successful weight loss when compared to placebo.

This weight loss was also much more likely to be maintained, while use of the drug was also associated with improvements in terms of biomarkers predictive of future cardiovascular events.

Eisai said: “Lorcaserin will not only provide Eisai with an opportunity to provide patients with a new obesity treatment option, it will also enable the company to make further contributions for the medical management of obesity.”

Lorcaserin has been developed by Eisai in collaboration with Arena Pharmaceuticals.

Earlier this month, the company published new clinical data for the leukaemia drug Dacogen, highlighting its efficacy compared to chemotherapy or a supportive care regimen.
