Eli Lilly announces Olympian support for diabetes campaign

1st July 2008

Eli Lilly has announced its Inspired by Diabetes campaign has received the support of swimmer and Olympian Gary Hall Jr.

Following his diagnosis with diabetes, Hall was prescribed with Humalog (insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin] from Eli Lilly to help manage his blood sugar.

Hall went on to win the gold medal at the 2000 games in Sydney and again four years later in Athens, becoming the world’s fastest swimmer in the 50-metre freestyle.

Prior to his attempts to retain his crown at the 2008 Beijing Games, Hall is partnering again with Eil Lilly to help inspire diabetes patients.

The global campaign encourages all people affected by diabetes to share their stories through the use of visual and written creative expressions.

Hall said: “Diabetes is the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced. In fact, when I was diagnosed I was told I wouldn’t be able to compete again at a world-class level.”

He added his Olympic success would not have been possible without the inspiration offered by other people with diabetes, with the everyday triumph of patients helping everyone to achieve their own dreams.

In February 2007, Eli Lilly announced the launch of the HumaPen Memoir device to simplify the administration of Humalog and diabetes management.
