Eligible groups for shingles vaccine announced

5th August 2015

Public Health England has announced the groups eligible to receive the shingles vaccine from the start of September for the 2015 to 2016 immunisation programme.

The vaccine will be offered routinely to people aged 70 years from September 1st onwards, while a catch-up scheme will be extended to those aged 78 years.

Additionally, patients who were eligible for immunisation in the first two years of the programme but have not yet been vaccinated will remain eligible until their 80th birthday.

This scheme will build on the success of the 2014 to 2015 vaccination campaign, which saw more than half of all 70, 78 and 79-year-olds vaccinated against shingles by the end of April 2015.

Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunisation at Public Health England, said: "This represents a significant achievement and will result in a considerable reduction in the number of cases of this debilitating and painful condition."

An episode of shingles typically lasts around two to four weeks and is characterised by pain, followed by a rash.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801796677-ADNFCR
