English hospitals ‘will lose more than 7,000 nursing posts by 2020’

19th January 2017

England's hospitals could be set to cut more than 7,000 nursing posts by 2020, a new report has indicated.

The Health Service Journal has analysed information from around one-quarter of the finance, workforce and efficiency plans submitted as part of the sustainability and transformation planning process, finding that considerable numbers of job losses could be on the cards.

In total, the analysis indicates that more than 17,000 posts could be lost as a result, including 7,300 nurses and midwives.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has responded to the figures with alarm, noting that there are already 24,000 vacant nursing posts across the UK, meaning any further reductions in staff numbers could lead to a major patient safety crisis.

Tom Sandford, director of the RCN in England, said: "We have been hearing from members how the current situation is the worst that many have ever experienced. The situation cannot be allowed to worsen."
