Ethicon completes acquisition of Acclarent

28th January 2010

Ethicon, a firm owned by Johnson and Johnson, announced this week that it has completed its acquisition of the privately held medical technology company Acclarent.

The organisation first revealed its intentions to buy Acclarent, which specialises in designing, developing and commercialising devices that detect conditions affecting the ear, nose and throat (ENT), in mid-December 2009.

Gary Pruden, company group chairman for Johnson and Johnson, who also has responsibility for Ethicon, explained that this move will allow the companies’ strengths to be combined.

“The surgical ENT market is under-penetrated and there is opportunity to help more patients restore their quality of life with less-invasive surgical solutions,” Mr Pruden furthered.

Ethicon manufactures products for the medical industry, including those that assist general surgery, wound closure and management, women’s health and urology.

Last year, it announced that its first computer-assisted personalised sedation device, the Sedasys System, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use by nurse teams and physicians.
