Ethicon product reduces colonoscopy over-sedation

22nd May 2008

Patients undergoing a colonoscopy for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer and disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract have less chance of being over-sedated if medical teams use its Sedasys system, Ethicon Endo-Surgery says.

Results from a trial showed gastroenterologists were able to use the system to maintain minimal to moderate sedation with propofol that helped prevent patients from entering deep sedation.

The results were included in its pre-market application for the product’s approval by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Daniel Pambianco, trial investigator and medical director of Charlottesville Medical Research, said over-sedation was a risk traditionally associated with the use of propofol.

“The system offers a way to personalise the level of sedation appropriate for each patient because it combines propofol delivery with sophisticated monitoring,” he added.

Ethicon is a Johnson & Johnson company; its other products include the Endopath Excel Access System and the Contour Curved Cutter Stapler
