European doctors leaders call for continuity of care during Brexit process

18th January 2017

Doctors leaders from across Europe have issued a warning that the UK's forthcoming exit from the European Union could have an impact on healthcare provision.

A joint letter from the presidents of six European medical organisations has been sent to the EU's lead Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, underlining the importance of ensuring that any Brexit deal does not pose a threat to Europe's health.

It was noted that medical research is becoming increasingly international in focus, meaning researcher mobility and clear long-term frameworks need to be maintained in a post-Brexit EU, particularly given the importance of international collaboration in areas such as antimicrobial resistance.

Co-signatory and president of the Standing Committee of European Doctors Jacques De Haller said: "Physicians are adamant that healthcare and the quality of medicine must be safeguarded, whatever the political developments in Europe. We cannot allow Brexit to impair access to healthcare or the quality of medicine."

In a separate letter, the British Medical Association and its French counterpart called for steps to be taken to safeguard the free movement of doctors and patients, while guaranteeing their rights, for similar public health reasons.
