FGDP(UK) to publish new implant dentistry standards

27th November 2017

FGDP(UK) – The Faculty of General Dental Practice UK – has announced that it will be compiling and publishing new national standards on implant dentistry.

Professor Cemal Ucer, a former president of the Association of Dental Implantology, will work with co-authors Dr Simon Wright and Dr Andrew Shelley to put together the guidance, which will be widely consulted on before it is finalised and published in the second half of 2018.

This reflects the fact that implant dentistry has become a staple of oral healthcare over the last 30 years and is now routinely available, with thousands of patients benefitting from this form of treatment every year.

FGDP(UK) already publishes Training Standards in Implant Dentistry, which is used by the General Dental Council to define the approach to training that governs implant dentistry in the UK, and the standards which should be met by training courses.

Dr Mick Horton, dean of FGDP(UK), said: "Since 2008, the profession has agreed on the standards to which dentists must be trained in order to place implants safely and competently, and … FGDP(UK) recognises the need to establish clear national standards."
