First Pharmacy MBA Programme Launched in the Netherlands

30th November 2022

The first international English language Pharmacy MBA in Europe was launched by the International Business School of Pharmacists (IBSP) in Wassenaar, the Netherlands, under the direction of the school’s head, Peter Felen.

Their mission is to provide pharmacists who are interested in learning business, economics, and entrepreneurship with the tools they need to do so. Eventually aiming to tackle issues like market dynamics, competition, and medicine scarcities.

Mr Felen, a pharmacy guest lecturer at the University of Groningen, said that “In this first international English-language Pharmacy MBA in Europe, participants follow a two-year academic program.”

Felen contends that pharmacists might be able to become more independent and hands-on in their approach to business to reduce their reliance on the government and insurance companies. For instance, “Pharmacists can retain consumers for the longer term by offering a subscription rate for vitamin D. That is an example of entrepreneurship.”

Spokespeople from across the world will be invited to attend the school up to 10 times annually to talk to students about relevant topics.

Mr Felen explained: “that may be, for example, a professor who comes to talk about a study.”

The new MBA targets pharmacists in Europe, but is also appropriate for wholesalers, anybody employed within pharmacy roles, and those in the pharmaceutical sector.

The first cohort will begin in April next year, at a value of €34,000, and is also available as a hybrid programme. Graduates on the hybrid course will get the globally acknowledged title: “Executive MBA Pharmacy.”
