GDC and BDIA issue warning over counterfeit dental equipment

7th August 2017

The General Dental Council (GDC) and the British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) have warned dentists of the dangers that can arise from purchasing counterfeit dental equipment.

This warning comes after a UK-based dentist was suspended for three months for repeatedly buying counterfeit items online, a misdemeanour discovered after two separate inspections carried out by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.

It was pointed out that non-compliant equipment endangers the health of both patients and those using it, as counterfeit items are not tested to the relevant safety standards.

Given the current trend in the number of websites offering noncompliant, counterfeit or potentially dangerous equipment to dentists, the BDIA and GDC warned dentists to be cautious of seemingly cheap devices provided by unknown sources.

Edmund Proffitt, chief executive of the BDIA, said: "The recent GDC hearing is a stark reminder of the seriousness of using of counterfeit dental devices. It may also sound alarm bells for any dentists who may have purchased from unreliable sources and emphasises the importance of purchasing from reputable suppliers."
