GDC confirms reappointment of current chair

28th February 2017

The General Dental Council (GDC) has announced that its privy council has reappointed Bill Moyes as chair of the organisation.

Mr Moyes, whose initial four-year spell in the role is due to end on September 30th, has had his tenure extended for a further four years until the end of September 2021, in order to help the regulator maintain the momentum of its recent reforms.

With a 20-year career in the Civil Service occupying policymaking roles in Whitehall and the Scottish Office, the GDC chair is also the current chair of the Gambling Commission.

Ian Brack, chief executive of the GDC, said Mr Moyes "has not shied from taking difficult decisions and has been willing to think radically about the way the GDC works in pursuit of our ambition to become a high-performing, effective regulator".

However, the British Dental Association (BDA) – which has been critical of Mr Moyes' leadership of the GDC – said his reappointment should be seen as a "missed opportunity".

BDA chair Mick Armstrong claimed his term in office to date has been defined by a collapse in trust in professional regulation among dentists, while questioning Mr Moyes' ability to deliver the necessary change.
