GDC reports strong response to recent consultation on regulatory reform

15th December 2017

The General Dental Council (GDC) has highlighted the progress it is making on its regulatory reform efforts after seeing a strong response to a recent consultation on the process.

Launched in January, the consultation was designed to encourage debate and invite feedback on the GDC's proposals for reforming dental regulation without the need for legislative change.

A total of 86 responses were received from practitioners, professional associations and partners, with broad support expressed for its basic proposals, while many key respondents voiced an interest in helping to shape the reforms going forward.

This support will aid the GDC in its efforts to overhaul its review of Fitness to Practise processes and develop a clearer understanding of what constitutes a serious issue, as well as its planned improvements to local complaints handling and the sharing of learning outcomes for upstream gains.

Ian Brack, chief executive and registrar of the GDC, said: "For this ambition to be realised, close collaboration with dental professionals and wider stakeholders across the sector will be needed and we look forward to undertaking that shared task in the coming months."
