GDC sees improved performance in latest review by PSA
The General Dental Council (GDC) has made progress in its efforts to improve its standards of regulation in the last year, a new report has shown.
Assessing the dental regulator's compliance in terms of meeting the official Standards of Good Regulation, the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) report showed that the GDC has met 21 of the 24 standards in 2016.
This is up from the 15 it was able to meet in the corresponding review for 2015, with all of the criteria met in terms of its performance on registrations, standards and guidance, and education and training.
It was also able to meet seven of the ten fitness to practise standards, up from two in last year's review.
Ian Brack, chief executive of the GDC, said: "We have invested significant effort in improving our performance against the standards of good regulation, and that effort is paying off."
However, the British Dental Association emphasised the fact that further progress is needed, as the PSA report showed the GDC failed to meet standards pertaining to the review and prioritisation of complaints in fitness of practise cases, as well as on the quality of final decisions and the secure retention of information on cases.
