GE Healthcare and Volcano implement new Ivus system

4th April 2007

GE Healthcare, the UK-headquartered medical products firm, has announced the successful implementation of Innova intravascular ultrasound (Ivus) in partnership with Volcano Corporation.

According to the businesses, the product, which has been installed at multiple sites, is the world’s first Ivus and cath lab system.

It combines GE Healthcare’s Innova all-digital X-ray cath lab imaging and s5i Ivus imaging from medical products firm Volcano.

Meanwhile, the two companies have also announced the successful implementation of a scheme which allows them to use Volcano’s Ivus cabling in all new Innova labs.

“We have older-generation Ivus consoles as well as an Innova Ivus system in our lab, so we understand first-hand the significant improvement in workflow,” commented Michael Foster of Providence Heart Institute in Columbia.

Dr Foster noted that using integrated Ivus has reduced imaging time “by at least 50 per cent”.

“Before, we had to locate the Ivus system, roll it into the lab and wait for the system to boot-up before I could begin imaging,” he explained.

GE Healthcare is US subsidiary of General Electric (GE) and is the first GE business to have its headquarters outside America.
