GE Healthcare opens first European 3D printing and design centre

GE Healthcare has announced the launch of its new Innovative Design and Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre for Europe, located in Uppsala, Sweden.

This is the company's first European 3D printing and design centre and will utilise technologies such as 3D printing and robotics to accelerate the launch of innovative products for the healthcare industry.

Metal and polymer printers and collaborative robots will be paired with traditional machining equipment in the design, test and production of 3D-printed parts for GE Healthcare products, which will address healthcare challenges at a lower cost than is currently possible.

One early project will see the company partnering with the biotechnology firm Amgen to test the performance of a new custom chromatography column, for use in the purification stage of biopharmaceutical production.

Andreas Marcstrom, manager of additive engineering at GE Healthcare's Uppsala site, said: "We are exploring opportunities where additives can bring cost savings and technical improvements to our supply chain and products."

Staff at the new centre will collaborate with workers at GE Healthcare's other advanced manufacturing and engineering centre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, sharing knowledge and working on new design ideas.
