GE Healthcare to purchase Orbotech Medical Solutions

3rd November 2010

GE Healthcare has announced that it will be acquiring the medical solutions business unit of technology company Orbotech for an upfront fee of $9 million (5.6 million pounds).

The deal will allow the firm to take control of Orbotech Medical Solutions' various assets, including the cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors used in GE Healthcare's Alcyone nuclear medicine technology.

These new systems have been identified by the manufacturer as offering great promise in the field of cardiology, as they can provide faster and clearer cardiac anatomy scans while requiring a smaller dose.

GE Healthcare expects the transaction to close in the first quarter of 2011, with Orbotech entitled to further milestone payments of up to $5 million based on product sales performance.

Nathan Hermony, general manager of nuclear medicine for GE Healthcare, said: "Through this acquisition, we will expand our investment in CZT technology to benefit our molecular imaging customers."

Last month, the company launched a new version of its Infinia Hawkeye SPECT/CT system, designed to offer superior performance to previous models.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800214120-ADNFCR
