Gilead pledges new funding to support HIV cure research

12th January 2017

Gilead Sciences has announced the provision of $22 million (17.95 million pounds) in funding for innovative research through its HIV cure grants programme.

A total of 12 HIV cure research projects will benefit from this fresh allocation of funds from Gilead, with leading academic institutions, non-profit organisations and community groups from around the world among the recipients.

These projects will focus on three key areas – translational research, efficacy studies in animal models and community perspectives of HIV cure – with the aim of creating a safe and effective treatment for the disease.

Gilead established its HIV cure grants programme in February 2016 and forms part of the company's broader commitment to curing and ultimately eradicating HIV and AIDS through its research and development and philanthropic leadership.

Dr William Lee, executive vice-president for research at Gilead Sciences, said: "We are excited about the potential of these projects and are looking forward to seeing the results and learnings that emerge from them."
