Gilead Sciences appoints Cisco finance head as new board member

Gilead Sciences has announced the appointment of Kelly Kramer as a new member of its board of directors and audit committee.

Ms Kramer currently serves as executive vice-president and chief financial officer of Cisco Systems, while prior to this she worked for 20 years in senior finance positions at GE, including that of chief financial officer of GE Healthcare's healthcare systems business.

She is also a member of the board of the Silicon Valley chapter of City Year, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing educational support for at-risk students in poor communities.

Dr John Martin, executive chairman of Gilead's board of directors, said: "Kelly's deep financial expertise in the technology and healthcare industries, including mergers and acquisitions, will be valuable as Gilead continues to grow across multiple therapeutic areas and around the world."

Earlier this week, the company announced that its HIV therapy Truvada has been approved as a means of reducing the risk of sexually-acquired HIV-1, a strategy known as pre-exposure prophylaxis. This could potentially allow Gilead to position the drug as an important tool in reducing HIV transmission rates across Europe.
