GlaxoSmithKline appoints new consumer healthcare chief

23rd March 2010

GlaxoSmithKline has announced the selection of Emma Walmsley as its new president for consumer healthcare in Europe and president designate of worldwide consumer healthcare.

The executive will assume her European role on May 1st 2010 and will take control of the firm’s business and brands in the region, while her global responsibilities will be passed to her within two years.

Her previous experience includes key roles at personal care firms such as Maybelline and her most recent employer L’Oreal, for whom she led consumer products activities in China.

Andrew Witty, chief executive officer for GlaxoSmithKline, expressed confidence that Ms Walmsley will prove a worthy successor to current president of worldwide consumer healthcare John Clarke.

He said: “Emma’s appointment comes at an important time as we seek to diversify and further grow this business.”

Earlier this week, the company announced the commencement of a new phase III study of its asthma drug Revolair, which is designed to establish its safety and efficacy.
