GlaxoSmithKline appoints new consumer healthcare head

3rd October 2016

GlaxoSmithKline has announced the promotion of Brian McNamara to the role of chief executive officer (CEO) of its consumer healthcare division with immediate effect.

Mr McNamara is currently head of Europe and the Americas within the company's consumer healthcare business, having joined the firm from Novartis following GlaxoSmithKline's purchase of Novartis' consumer health division last year.

Prior to joining GlaxoSmithKline, he spent 11 years at Novartis and 16 years at Procter and Gamble, giving him a considerable amount of relevant experience. He has been a member of GlaxoSmithKline's consumer healthcare executive team since 2015.

Mr McNamara will be based in the UK and has been appointed as the successor to Emma Walmsley, who was last week appointed CEO designate of the entire GlaxoSmithKline business, succeeding Sir Andrew Witty.

The new consumer health CEO will report to Sir Andrew until Ms Walmsley becomes CEO, as well as joining its corporate executive team effective immediately.

Sir Andrew said: "With his significant experience and expertise, Brian is the clear choice to build on the current momentum we are seeing in our business and fully maximise the future opportunities we have with our brands and to deliver the benefits of the integration."
