GlaxoSmithKline launches Sir Andrew Witty GSK Scholarship scheme
GlaxoSmithKline has announced the launch of a new global scholarship programme named after its retiring chief executive officer Sir Andrew Witty.
The company is allying with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to establish the Sir Andrew Witty GSK Scholarship scheme, which aims to support the training and development of new global health leaders and strengthen the capacity of African health systems.
Over a ten-year period, 30 scholarships will be awarded to applicants from sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to study in London towards a one-year Master's degree in health fields such as infectious disease control or global mental health.
Tuition fees and a tax-free living allowance will be funded by GlaxoSmithKline, which is running the programme to honour Sir Andrew's commitment to addressing health challenges in the developing world.
Professor Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "I have known Andrew for more than 30 years, and I am delighted that his outstanding leadership and achievements are being honoured with this scholarship fund established in his name."
Sir Andrew is stepping down from his role at GlaxoSmithKline today (March 31st 2017), with Emma Walmsley succeeding him.
