GlaxoSmithKline tops 2016 Access to Medicine Index
GlaxoSmithKline has once again been named as the industry's top performer in terms of efforts to improve access to healthcare in developing countries.
The company has been ranked first in the 2016 Access to Medicine Index, marking the fifth consecutive occasion on which it has topped the ranking. It took a leadership position in research and development, pricing, manufacturing and distribution, and product donations.
GlaxoSmithKline has now led the index every time since its launch in 2008, achieving an improved score on the 2014 index and ranking among the top three in all but one of the seven categories.
Since the 2014 report, the company has achieved a number of key milestones, including the receipt of a positive scientific opinion from European regulators for its new malaria candidate vaccine, an expansion of the availability of the HIV drug dolutegravir, and the spearheading of collaborations with African universities studying non-communicable diseases.
It has also introduced equitable pricing strategies for more products, reached 1.3 million children in some of the world's poorest countries through its Save the Children partnership, and advanced research into potential new antibiotics.
Sir Andrew Witty, chief executive officer of GlaxoSmithKline, said: "As a business, and an industry, we must push ourselves to go further and faster in strengthening access to healthcare. This is a challenge that we are ready and willing to take on."
