GMC report highlights ‘state of unease’ in medical profession

27th October 2016

Increasing pressure on the medical profession is leading to stress and unhappiness among staff, according to the General Medical Council (GMC).

The organisation's annual report on the state of medical education and practice in the UK has indicated that a dangerous level of alienation is currently being felt by doctors in training, with the struggles experienced by many healthcare services impacting education and training standards.

So far, the standard of NHS care remains high despite this, with GMC data for 2015 showing that it received seven percent fewer complaints about doctors compared to 2014, while the vast majority of doctors have not been the subject of complaints to the GMC.

However, the report also underlined a feeling that the system cannot continue as before, requiring new solutions from all the stakeholders involved.

This includes the GMC itself, which will need to focus on light-touch regulation, reassuring trainees they are valued doctors, and addressing the anger and frustration generated by the junior doctors' contract dispute.

GMC chair Professor Terence Stephenson and chief executive Niall Dickson said: "There is a state of unease within the medical profession across the UK that risks affecting patients as well as doctors. The reasons for this are complex and multifactorial, and some are longstanding, yet the signals of distress are unmistakeable."
