GMC warns of potential ‘crunch point’ for medical profession

19th December 2017

The General Medical Council (GMC) has issued a report highlighting the potential pressures that the NHS workforce will face if recruitment is not stepped up.

According to the organisation's 'State of medical education and practice in the UK' report, an urgent overhaul of NHS medical training and workforce planning strategies are needed as the health service faces growing pressures due to an increasing and ageing population.

It was noted that the supply of new doctors has failed to keep pace with changes in demand, with the number of staff on the medical register growing by only two percent since 2012, while the dependence on non-UK-qualified doctors has increased, even as the UK is at risk of becoming a less attractive place for overseas doctors to work.

As such, the GMC is calling for more to be done to ensure a healthy supply of good doctors into UK practice, while steps should be taken to help the UK medical profession evolve, to
reduce the pressure and burden on doctors where possible, and to improve working culture and make employment and training more supportive and flexible.

Charlie Massey, chief executive of the GMC, said: "Each country needs to think carefully about how many doctors are needed, what expertise we need them to have so they can work as flexibly as possible, and where they should be located given the changes and movement in population expected."
