Government announces new maternity support measures

13th November 2012

The government has announced a 25 million pound initiative aimed at improving care, support and experience for women during pregnancy.

Using this new funding, birthing environments in NHS facilities are to be enhanced, allowing maternity services to implement en-suite facilities, rooms where partners can stay overnight or amenities such as birthing pools.

Meanwhile, the NHS Information Service for Parents is to be expanded over the next six months to cover children up to 18 months of age, offering advice on various issues via regular emails, videos and texts.

Among the areas covered is postnatal depression, as it is important that the signs and symptoms of this condition are spotted by women or their partners at the earliest opportunity.

Health minister Dr Dan Poulter said: "A new arrival in the family is a joyous time but can present challenges for mums and families, particularly new families. I want to help women and their partners as much as possible."

This comes after the government announced plans earlier this year to provide NHS health visitors with enhanced training to help them spot signs of postnatal depression.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801487103-ADNFCR
