Government funding announced for HIV prevention programmes
Public Health England has selected 12 projects that will receive funding from the HIV Prevention Innovation Fund for 2017-18.
A total of 600,000 pounds has been allocated to the dozen projects, which aim to address determinants of high-risk behaviour, promote the prompt diagnosis of HIV in vulnerable groups, tackle stigmas associated with HIV and improve understanding of the disease.
Examples include a digital anti–stigma campaign in Brighton and Hove, an initiative targeting the black African community in Manchester, a research programme involving male sex workers in Tyne and Wear, and an information campaign aimed at people in prison.
Public health minister Steve Brine said: "The 12 projects announced today will boost local action and spread best practice to further reduce rates of HIV across the whole country."
In 2015, an estimated 101,000 people in the UK had HIV, with 13,500 unaware and therefore at risk of unknowingly passing on the virus to others. The HIV Prevention Innovation Fund provides financial support for new projects that can tackle this problem.
