Government issues call to action on NHS Health Checks

22nd July 2013

Public Health England (PHE) has called for NHS Health Checks to become more widely used and available after highlighting the benefits they could deliver.

A ten-point plan has been launched by the government to help local councils roll out the health checks to 20 percent of the eligible local population a year, which means that 15 million people will be able to take advantage by 2018/19.

It is also planning to launch a website to show how many Health Check offers are being made by each local authority.

A PHE review has suggested that checking the blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and lifestyle of people aged between 40 and 74 could identify problems earlier and prevent 650 deaths, 1,600 heart attacks and 4,000 cases of diabetes a year.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "We are an ageing population and thinking about our health early is vital to living a long and prosperous life."

This comes as part of Mr Hunt's overall strategy of saving 30,000 lives a year by 2020 by combating causes of avoidable premature mortality.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801615260-ADNFCR
