Government outlines new strategy to combat respiratory illness

19th July 2011

The Department of Health has outlined a new national strategy aimed at improving standards of care for respiratory disease, which has become a notably prevalent issue for the NHS.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley has unveiled the Outcomes Strategy for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and Asthma, which is designed to coordinate the efforts of the NHS, patients, social care and voluntary organisations in dealing with this issue.

Adopting a new approach called React, it aims to emphasise issues such as promoting good respiratory health and early diagnosis, as well as evidence-based treatment approaches and active partnership between healthcare providers and patients.

This comes in response to World Health Organization data showing that the UK has the second highest mortality rate from COPD and asthma in Europe.

Mr Lansley said: "This is just the start in helping fundamentally to reduce the burden of respiratory disease and transform for the better the health outcomes and quality of life for millions of people."

Last week, the department announced that new funding is being allocated to improving NHS stem cell services in a bid to save more lives.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800626250-ADNFCR
